World Aids Day at Erie Family Health Center
On Thursday, December 1, Erie joined the millions of people recognizing the 30th anniversary of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, celebrating the lives of those currently living with HIV/AIDS and remembering those who have passed on from the illness. The event was held at Erie Humboldt Park with a turn out so large that people overflowed out of the room and had to peer through blinds on the windows to participate in the day’s festivities. Presentations on nutrition, HIV, diabetes and smoking were given as well as a cooking demonstration that provided everyone with a delicious lunch. Several people in Erie’s HIV/AIDS program, Lending Hands for Life, spoke about their unique struggles and the impact Erie’s caring services have had on them. One gentleman said, “Here, I’m not just a number. I’m Michael. This is my family… They care for you. They show you love. They guide you. That makes you want to fight and win forever.” The woman who created the name Lending Hands for Life also shared her inspiration behind the branding in that Erie shares its love and resources and really does lend a hand to those in need. Thank you to everyone who made the event possible!
Erie Family Health Center has been named one of the Top 100 Workplaces by the Chicago Tribune!
For the second year in a row, Erie Family Health Center was named one of the Top 100 Workplaces in Chicago by the Chicago Tribune. We were ranked number 18 of the midsize companies, 11 steps up from last year’s 29th place mention. The focus was on teamwork, leadership, direction, communication and of course results. It’s no surprise that Erie was recognized due to the type of working environment created by Erie staff members each day and the high-quality services we provide to an increasing patient population. People are genuinely concerned for one another and have a radar that’s tuned into the needs of others. That, after all, is why Erie exists. We are here for those who do not have access to health care resources, striving to meet their needs and make them feel respected and worthwhile. This honor reflects the pride and spirit of our employees and their commitment to providing superb services for our patients.
2011 Adam R. Swider Employee of the Year Award
Every day at Erie Family Health Center, each employee works to make lives better… for the community, for our patients, for each other. At the end of every year, employees are asked to nominate from amongst themselves an individual that demonstrates the highest level of passion and commitment for the Adam R. Swider Employee of the Year Award. This year marked the seventh year the Swider Award was presented to an Erie employee. Mr. Adam Swider was born into the West Town community and faced his own hardships as a child. He grew up with a clear understanding of the tremendous barriers faced by families in need, especially regarding health care. For these reasons, Mr. Swider became a strong supporter of Erie’s work, and thus Mrs. Swider chose Erie as the organization to establish her husband’s memorial. Mr. and Mrs. Swider’s thoughtfulness and generosity have allowed Erie to honor one of our own employees who shares this same dedication.
This year’s nominees included Amy Valukas, Angelina Loza, Ankush Oberoi, Araceli Orozco, Claudia Jimenez, Claudia Salgado, Cynthia Arce, Elizabeth McKelvey, Erica Plaisier, Iliana Solorzano, Jazlin Flecha, Joyce Quezada, Kate Balsley, Kenia Lopez, Lauren Ranalli, Lymari Castillo, Maria Vazquez, Marian Byrd, Marisol Berrios, Marisol Ortiz, Mateo Donato, Nancy Serrata, Paul Stieber, Peter Mayock, Rocio Fierro, Sara Ospina, Soleak Sim, Stacy Dobreff, Stephanie Willding, Tiosha Goss, Yadira Mora, Yenny Mazon and Yesenia Gutierrez.
Three exceptional staff members were finalists for this award: Alejandro Cruz, Medical Assistant; Isela Garcia, Supervisor Oral Health Clinic; and Rachael Godinez Wallace, Clinical Educator RN. On Saturday, December 10, 2011, the Adam R. Swider Employee of the Year Award was presented to an exceptional employee, one who has consistently demonstrated her commitment to Erie’s mission and serves as a role model to other employees: Rachael Godinez Wallace.
