Know the Signs of a Heart Attack

February is National Heart Month.  Take a moment this month to learn the signs of a heart attack.

Here is some expert advice from the American Heart Association

Some heart attacks are sudden and intense — the “movie heart attack,” where no one doubts what’s happening. But most heart attacks start slowly, with mild pain or discomfort. Often people affected aren’t sure what’s wrong and wait too long before getting help. Here are signs that can mean a heart attack is happening:   heart health

  • Chest discomfort. Most heart attacks involve discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes, or that goes away and comes back. It can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain.
  • Discomfort in other areas of the upper body. Symptoms can include pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach.
  • Shortness of breath with or without chest discomfort.
  • Other signs may include breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or light headedness

As with men, women’s most common heart attack symptom is chest pain or discomfort. But women are somewhat more likely than men to experience some of the other common symptoms, particularly shortness of breath, nausea/vomiting, and back or jaw pain.

Learn the signs, but remember this: Even if you’re not sure it’s a heart attack, have it checked out. Minutes matter! Fast action can save lives — maybe your own. Don’t wait more than five minutes to call 9-1-1 or your emergency response number.

Children’s Dental Health Month

February is Children’s Dental Health Month.  Does your child need to see a dentist?  You know where to turn!  Schedule an appointment at Erie Dental Health Center.  Here are some important reminders about your child’s oral health.  Feb2010

  • Schedule regular dental visits beginning by your child’s first birthday.
  • Brush your baby’s teeth as soon as they come in with a small, soft toothbrush and water.
  • At age 2, begin using toothpaste, but use only a pea-sized amount.
  • By age 3, children usually have a complete set of 20 baby teeth. Teach your children to brush properly by standing behind them and holding the toothbrush correctly.
  • By age 4 or 5, children should be able to brush their own teeth twice a day with supervision. Teach children how to spit out remaining toothpaste and rinse with water after brushing.
  • By age 7, children should be able to brush their teeth alone but make sure they clean the front and back of all teeth. Gently brush all gum lines to remove germs.
