Changes Coming to Medicaid:
GET READY!

There are changes coming to who is eligible for Medicaid, and how often someone needs to reapply to keep their coverage. Erie Family Health Centers cares for our patients with or without insurance, but we want to help our patients keep their coverage, if they are eligible.

Changes to Immigrant Eligibility:

As of October 1, 2026, non-pregnant adults will need to have one of these four immigration statuses to qualify for full Medicaid:

• U.S. Citizen
• Lawful Permanent Resident (subject to 5 year waiting period)
• Cuban/Haitian Entrants
• Compact of Free Association (COFA) Migrants

There is no change to eligibility for children under age 19 (All Kids) and pregnant/postpartum individuals (MPE/Moms & Babies). There is no change to eligibility for state-funded Medicaid-like programs, such as AATV, HBIS (program still on pause), or Medicaid coverage for survivors of domestic violence.

Work Requirements:

Beginning January 1, 2027, some adults with Medicaid (known as “ACA Adults”) will need to fulfill a work requirement and prove that they work, volunteer, or go to school to keep their coverage.

This new rule may apply to individuals who:​

• are ages 19-64​
• do not have a child under 18 residing in your home who is related to you, and
• are not receiving (or entitled to) Medicare Part A or Part B

Many people will be exempt from these new work requirements, including, but not limited to:

• people who are pregnant
• people caring for a dependent child under age 14 or a person with a disability
• people who have health issues that prevent them from meeting a work requirement

Need to Renew Medicaid Coverage More Frequently:

Beginning January 1, 2027, if you are an adult covered by Medicaid, you must submit information to prove that you still qualify – and either meet or are exempt from work requirements – every six months, instead of just once a year. (Illinois calls this “redetermination”.)

Don't Lose Your Coverage Accidentally!

The State of Illinois mails Medicaid renewal letters to people at the home address they have on file every month. If this letter goes to the wrong address, or if you don't reply within 30 days, you can lose your Medicaid insurance.
