Important Health Screenings
for Colon Cancer

The American Cancer Society recommends that you begin screening for colon cancer at age 45 – no matter your race, ethnicity, or gender.

Colon cancer is the most preventable, yet least prevented cancer. Erie partners with Cologuard for easy at-home colon cancer screening tests. Cologuard is a non-invasive, at-home colon cancer screening test.

  • It’s for people 45 or older at average risk for colon cancer.
  • There’s no preparation, and you can screen in the privacy of your home.

WHY GET SCREENED?

  • When caught in early stages, colon cancer is treatable in about 90% of people.
  • Colon cancer is on the rise in people under the age of 50. Screening begins at age 45.
  • Many patients with early‐stage colon cancer have no symptoms and are diagnosed through screening.

SCREENING MATTERS

Getting screened regularly may increase your chances of finding colon cancer on time.

  • Ask your provider how often you should get screened.
  • Cologuard is covered by Medicare, Illinois Medicaid and most major insurers. Depending on your insurance there may be a small out of pocket cost to take the test.

Patients who have a higher risk of developing colon cancer because of a history of polyps, a history of inflammatory bowel disease, family history of colon cancer or other reason should be screened with a colonoscopy.  If you think you are at higher risk of developing colon cancer for any reason, tell your provider.
